Sala under investigation, reactions from Milanese and Roman politicians. Carlo Monguzzi: "Worse than Tangentopoli, the mayor must clarify or resign."

Milan, 17 July 2025 – Sala must draw the consequences of the political earthquake that the latest, sensational developments in the investigations into urban planning in Milan have caused at Palazzo Marino : this is the the leitmotif TV punctuates the statements of leading figures in Milanese politics and, inevitably, national politics. Sharp words were expressed this morning by one of the strongest critics of the Sala administration's urban planning policies in recent years, Carlo Monguzzi , a longtime figure in the Milanese and Lombardy environmental movement and now a member of Europa Verde.
Monguzzi (Green Europe): "Everyone go home""What's happening in Milan is worse than Tangentopoli. Sala must fully clarify the entire urban planning issue. Or everyone should go home." This was stated by Milan's Europa Verde city councilor, Carlo Monguzzi, commenting on the urban planning investigation , for which Mayor Sala and Urban Regeneration Councilor Giancarlo Tancredi are also under investigation (the prosecutor's office has requested house arrest for the latter).

"Tancredi should go away and apologize to the city," Monguzzi urges, branding the mayor's statements "unacceptable." Sala should stop saying, 'I wasn't there, and if I was, I was asleep.' Now it's worse than Tangentopoli, where there were serious instances of corruption influencing certain decisions. But here, the entire urban planning system is at the service of private individuals, with a parallel department and a parallel PGT. You can't get away with 'the bad apple.' The mayor should come to the city hall and explain everything. And for the sake of decency, all projects should be halted, starting with San Siro."
Swimming Pool (League): "The Titanic has crashed"The League , after national secretary Matteo Salvini said he was "shocked and concerned," provincial secretary (and municipal councilor Samuele Piscina) is covering the situation by calling for the resignation of the council if the request for house arrest made against councilor Tancredi and five other people is validated.
"Guarantors, yes, always. But now one comes out every day and Milan's image is ruined," he comments. "No one is guilty, for now, but it's clear that political responsibility exists, and the mayor can no longer avoid reporting it seriously to the mayor's chamber. A mayor who truly loves Milan can't turn a blind eye." "The investigation," Piscina continues, "is just the tip of the iceberg on which the left-led Titanic crashed: the Salva Milano scandals, the Suspended Families, the BEIC affair, the Landscape Commission case... If Councilor Tancredi's arrest is validated, he should resign for the good of the city."

Forza Italia, a guarantor as per its DNA , nonetheless Licia Ronzulli —one of the party's leading figures—absolutely condemns Sala: " Sala has many shortcomings . He was not and is not a good mayor for the city of Milan. That said, Sala should resign not because of what we're reading in the papers, but because of the city's poor governance. In this case, too, Forza Italia asserts its stance on the principle of guarantorism. We do not use the justice system as a club to defeat our political adversaries. We have never done so, and we certainly will not do so today."

"I was mayor and I know how difficult it is to say no to a zoning change or to reduce land consumption , and how hard it was to make Turin the only major city to give back land instead of consuming it," said former Turin mayor and Five Star Movement MP Chiara Appendino, interviewed by Agora Estate on Rai3. "But a disturbing picture emerges from Milan, and Sala must step aside . Hearing the right-wingers preach morality, however, is unacceptable: not only have they dismantled the justice system to save white-collar criminals—from abuse of office to wiretapping to our anti-corruption law—but a few months ago they voted for the disgusting Save Milan bill alongside the Democratic Party. It was clear that Milan was in a real estate bubble, but they were the ones who voted for the law, and we were the ones who opposed it from day one. Now the Save Milan bill is stalled in the Senate only because they were scared, but they can't undo what they've done."

For Azione, the political movement led by Carlo Calenda, " clarification is needed , but urban planning in the city of Milan must not be blocked. The city's urban renewal cannot be stopped. Milan has been paralyzed for several months , and real answers must be given to the families who have invested and are unable to enter their homes. Those in charge—the judiciary, Parliament, and the City Council— must help Milan break this impasse once and for all."
